Multi-phase Delivery District Heating Network
Project Location:
Cardiff
Client Name:
Hemiko

Managing excavation and installation in areas with unknown and congested underground services with restricted access across city-centre locations
Coordinating multiple work fronts across seven phases with varying constraints and priorities whilst adapting to ongoing design and material changes
Maintaining programme momentum while adjusting to evolving site conditions and service conflicts
Delivering in live urban environments with high public interface
Challenge
Project Description:
Valmech, part of OCU Group, supported Hemiko in the delivery of the Cardiff District Heating Network,
installing underground district heating pipework across multiple phases of the scheme.
The works included jointing, welding, testing and tie-ins within live excavation environments, often influenced by changing ground conditions and the presence of existing services. Delivered across several key city-centre locations, the project required continuous coordination between site teams and the client to adapt to evolving designs, maintain programme momentum, and ensure safe, efficient delivery.
Established daily coordination between excavation, welding and installation teams to maintain alignment
Reviewed and adjusted installation details to accommodate design updates and minimise delays
Applied phased testing and completion strategies to recover programme and maintain progress
Maintained strong communication across all stakeholders to ensure efficient and safe delivery
Solution
Key Stats:
Installation of multiple UDHN pipe sizes across the network
