Challenge

Project Description:

Veolia Environmental Services UK (Sheffield) appointed Valmech, part of OCU Group, to undertake diversion works at Surrey Street and Norfolk Street for a programme of heat network upgrades across the city to strengthen resilience within the existing network and support future customer connections.

The works focused on diverting an existing heat network main away from a known weak point, allowing network operation to be maintained while remedial works were carried out.

  • Developed a detailed isolation and tie-in strategy aligned to Veolia’s operational requirements, ensuring all critical works were completed within planned night-time shutdown windows

  • Sequenced construction activities to minimise disruption to businesses and pedestrians, supported by clear traffic management, signage, and local stakeholder engagement

  • Coordinated activities to safely complete tie-ins within a live urban environment

Key Stats:

  • 250m of Series 1 UDHN pipework installed

  • Pipe diameters ranging from DN400 to DN125

  • 4 no.4 x DN400 pre-insulated tee pieces installed

  • Successfully diverted the existing heat network main away from a known weak point, improving network resilience and reducing risk of future failure

  • Maintained network operation while remedial works were undertaken

  • Delivered 250m of new UDHN pipework and associated large diameter connections within a challenging city-centre environment

  • Enhanced long-term network capacity and flexibility, supporting Veolia’s wider programme of heat network upgrades across Sheffield
